Secret History

"The mere fact of insisting on a secret history calls into question our whole construct of history as a rational object. In that sense, historical thinking becomes more postmodern and imaginative, perhaps hopelessly so — we are forced to recognize that there are a multitude of stories or histories that provide context, and that each one gives us a fragmented perspective on what is going on." — Erik Davis, April 1997 interview

A secret history (or shadow history) is a version of history that is at odds with commonly accepted historical events and which is claimed to have been deliberately suppressed or forgotten. It is a fantasy of history.

Secret history differs from Alternate History in that the world looks the same as the one we know. The Secret History is in the why and the hidden backdrop.
